You lied too much. It heard.
Fictional archive story · Horror / dark fantasy

The record
The tower does not appear on the skyline until the first bell. Those nearby describe a familiar street becoming unusually long. Conversations thin out. Dogs turn toward a sound their owners have not yet heard. Then a single note settles over the town.
The first bell
You remember a lie that mattered. Not a small kindness or an embarrassed excuse. A lie that changed someone else’s life. You hear the sentence exactly as you said it, including the confidence in your voice.
At the second bell, every clock within sight shows a different time. Hooded figures gather at the end of the street. They do not approach. The street shortens.
The rules
Do not follow anyone who claims not to hear the bells. Do not enter the tower to stop them. Do not replace your lie with a more convenient one. If you speak, speak plainly. The thing listening has already heard your excuses.
The third bell
The surviving record ends before describing the third sound. On the final page, six figures are drawn beneath a tower whose doorway resembles an open mouth. A sentence circles the illustration: your time is up.
Below it, in a different hand, someone has written that silence is not proof of escape. Sometimes the final bell is heard only by the person it was meant for.
Archivist’s warning
If everyone around you stops speaking at once, do not ask whether they heard it too.
