Ash & Ether · Record 001 · Summonings
The familiar chooses you. The bond decides what remains.
Fictional archive story · Horror / dark fantasy

The record
The oldest mistake is believing that a familiar is a pet. It is a witness. It waits on the other side of ordinary things: a window after midnight, a bowl of still water, the small silence after a bell. It has heard every promise you have made to yourself. It knows which ones you broke.
The invocation
In this fictional record, the seeker places a black candle, a silver bell, rainwater, and an unused crystal beside a closed window. The bell is sounded once. Nothing happens immediately. That is important. Whatever comes running at the first sound was already in the room.
The true familiar arrives without asking to be let in. It may resemble a cat, a bird, or something the seeker remembers from a childhood dream. Its reflection takes a moment longer to arrive.
The rules
Do not choose its shape. Do not offer your true name. Let it approach the crystal before you approach it. If two shadows follow one creature, leave the window closed. If it speaks in the voice of someone you miss, do not answer.
The consequence
Once accepted, the bond is not confined to affection. Its fear can wake you. Its pain can reach you across any distance. If it dies, you feel the loss as though something inside your own body has been removed. If you die first, the familiar decides what happens to your soul.
Archivist’s warning
A companion can love you and still refuse to let you go.
