Finding the house is only the beginning.
Fictional archive story · Horror / dark fantasy

The record
The house is not hidden in the forest. The forest is arranged around the house. Paths bend away from it, maps leave a pale space where it should stand, and travelers remember passing its gate years before they were born.
The approach
The surviving account describes a narrow path lined with roots that resemble fingers. Every window is dark except one upstairs. A silhouette moves behind the glass, stirring a pot without lifting its head. The chimney releases no smoke. Still, the air smells of something the traveler’s grandmother used to make.
At the porch, the visitor finds three steps. From the road there were only two. A voice inside asks what has been lost. It does not ask who has arrived.
The rules
Answer only the question you were asked. Do not count the shoes beside the door. Refuse any chair that is already warm. If your own voice calls from upstairs, remain downstairs. Never promise to return merely to be polite.
The bargain
The witch may return what you lost, but not necessarily in the form you remember. A vanished friend may arrive as a letter. A forgotten year may fit inside a jar. A broken heart may be repaired so completely that it no longer recognizes the person who broke it.
The price is spoken before the gift is shown. Listen to the entire sentence.
Archivist’s warning
If you leave and hear the door close twice, something else has left with you. Some doors still listen.
