He has the bone you need. He knows why you need it.
Fictional archive story · Horror / dark fantasy

The record
His stall appears where two streets almost meet. It is never there in daylight, though its shadow sometimes remains. Beneath a worn awning, small boxes are arranged with the care of a jeweler’s display. None have prices. Each has a name.
The encounter
The merchant wears gloves too large for his hands. He does not greet the visitor. He selects a box and waits. Inside may be a tiny bird bone, a fragment pale as chalk, or something with too many joints. The correct piece feels familiar before it is touched.
One customer asked whether the objects belonged to the dead. The merchant replied that belonging was not permanent.
The rules
Ask what the relic does before asking what it costs. Do not open a box bearing your name. Never let him measure your hand. If a piece begins to knock from inside its container, let him close it. Count your change only after leaving the street.
The exchange
He accepts things that money cannot purchase: the sound of a beloved voice, the memory of a safe place, the ability to recognize a certain face. A bargain may seem merciful until the missing thing becomes necessary.
The relic will do what was promised. The archive has found no reliable account of the merchant lying. That is not the same as finding an account of him telling the whole truth.
Archivist’s warning
If he says the item has been waiting for you, ask how long. If he says you brought it back, leave.
